What an Alarm System Can't Do for Your Home

Many people believe that a good alarm system is the best thing they can do to try to protect their homes from intruders. While it is certainly true that having an alarm system installed can be great for offering you and your family a feeling of security, it is also true that alarm systems can be incredibly expensive.

Good alarm systems can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, and you also have to consider the monthly service fee that goes along with them when you are trying to determine whether one of these fits into your budget.

Whether you have an alarm system installed in your home or not, you should keep in mind that there are other things you probably need to do in order to make your home completely secure. Though they are, generally, great protection for your home, alarm systems are not the only form of defense your home needs for optimal protection.

Limitations of Alarm Systems

Alarm systems do not make your house impenetrable. A determined burglar may decide to break into your home, regardless. Even the sound of the alarm going off may not deter a thief from entering your home and grabbing everything of value he can find within a few minutes. Most burglars realize (or assume) that it will take the police or security services several minutes to arrive at your home, and in many cases they decide it is worth the risk to grab a few items of value before they run away.

Alarm systems can also be disabled, though this is actually not a common occurrence. Professional burglars who make a career out of breaking into other people's homes may become skilled enough that they can bypass certain types of alarm systems. The point in mentioning this is simply to inform you so that you don't purchase an alarm system thinking that it will keep your home totally secure.

One of the worst things you can do is fall into a trap of believing that because you have a security system no one can illegally enter your home. This is a dangerous way of thinking. So, what should you do to reinforce your home's security?

Reinforce Your Locks

Sure, you already have an alarm system, but as we have already discussed that system is not necessarily impenetrable. One thing that your alarm system cannot do for you is make your locks more secure. If you want to keep people out of your home, making sure all of your door and window locks are durable and strong is important whether you have an alarm system or not. Go through your house room by room and test the locks on all points of entry into your home. If you feel like any of them are a bit questionable and might not hold up to the strength (or tools) of a determined intruder, then you should strongly consider replacing them.

Install Motion Detector Lighting

With some fancier alarm systems, motion detector lighting may be included in your package. For most people, however, motion detectors have to be installed separately. If you or someone in your home happens to be handy with this type of thing, you can save some money on installation by doing it yourself.

Motion detectors provide protection a bit beyond the structure of your home, alerting you to the presence of an intruder before he or she ever reaches your house. This can be an important defense mechanism because it can provide you with some advance warning that something is going on, giving you time to call the police before a break-in ever happens.

If your motion detectors are hooked up with your alarm system, your security company will also be alerted right away. So, even if you aren't home the police will still have a bit of extra time to get to your home before any major damage can occur.
