Securing Your House with a Fence
Having a fence installed around your yard is a great idea for a multitude of reasons. Fences can keep the neighborhood kids out of your yard, keep your neighbors' landscapers or other workers off your property, and they can also provide you with a great sense of security.
Fences can vary in expense depending on the type of materials you choose, the size of your yard, and the number of additional security features you might choose to go along with it. You might want to begin examining your options by searching for fences online so that you can get a good idea of the different types of fencing that are available in your area.
In addition to looking online, you should also check out your local home improvement supply store. They can not only show you what they have in stock, they can also give you some ideas by showing you different types of fencing in specialty catalogs.
Reasons for Having a Fence Installed
Security is the primary reason that most people choose to install a fence around their yards. Whether you have children or pets, or you simply want to add a layer of security around your home, installing the proper fencing can be the ideal solution for your problems.
To protect your home and property, you will want to install fencing that is tall enough to keep intruders from being able to jump the fence. This is why chain-link fences are fairly ineffective at keeping unwanted visitors out of your yard.
When choosing your fence, you will probably want to go with a wooden privacy fence. The type of wood that you choose will largely be a personal decision based on your own tastes, but you should also consider environmental factors that may be an issue where you live.
Choose a fence that is at least six feet tall for optimal protection and privacy, and also make sure that the design of the fence is such that people can look through the slats of your fence into your yard. After all, part of the point in installing a fence is to enhance the security of your home, so you don't want people being able to look at the belongings that may be in your yard or on your deck.
Get Several Estimates
Unless you are very handy with do it yourself projects, you will probably want to enlist the services of a professional to install your new fence. Rather than simply going with the first estimate that you receive, however, you should take the time to obtain at least three different estimates for the work you want done. You need this many estimates so that you can adequately compare equipment, labor, and other miscellaneous costs that professionals are offering.
The odds are pretty good that the more estimates you receive the more likely you will be to find one that is well within your budget. Remember, however, that it is not always best to go with the cheapest quote you get. In comparing quotes, you need to also look at the quality of the materials that the professional is proposing to use as well as each professional's reputation.
If you don't know anyone who can personally recommend a specific professional, try checking different forums online to see if you can find recommendations that way. There are specialized referral services that can help you find reliable professionals in your area.
