How to Secure a Pool
People who own pools have a great responsibility to provide security and protection not only for their own families, but for other people who might visit their homes as well. Because of this, it is essential that pool owners take extra precautions to ensure that their pools are safe and secure.
When planning a security system for your pool there are many things to take into consideration. For instance, drowning usually occurs very rapidly and with little warning. Even if you have a policy that an adult must always be present when children are in the pool, it is important to remember that if a person's attention is diverted even for just a minute, it is enough time for tragedy to occur.
To make your pool as secure as possible, you should start by installing security fencing around either the pool area itself or your backyard. For optimal pool security you should have the fencing installed around the perimeter of the pool. This will make it more difficult for people to get into the pool unnoticed.
When choosing a fence for your pool area, there are several things you should think about in order to determine the type of fence that is best for you. From basic chain link to custom designed wood, you will have many different options to choose from. When making your decision, try to keep a few things in mind as you browse through the different types of fencing:
- How effective or sturdy a fence will be at keeping curious children out of your pool
- How durable the product is. Will it withstand harsh weather? Will it be easy to maintain and keep clean?
- Will it be easy for children or teenagers to climb or jump over it?
- Is the fence made out of materials that are safe for children to be exposed to?
You should also consider having security alarms installed on your new fence. Have the alarm attached to the gate so that if it is opened by someone who shouldn't be there a loud sound will alert your family members. These types of alarms are generally battery operated for safety reasons, so you have to watch them carefully to ensure that the battery is fully charged at all times.
Another very effective security idea is to have motion lighting installed around your entire pool area. You can have a professional install these lights so that they are connected to your alarm system, but it is not recommended that you attempt to do this yourself.
There are also alarm systems that you can have professionally installed in your pool that offer you security and peace of mind, particularly if you have young children at home. These advanced alarm systems can detect the presence of even the smallest child in less than one or two seconds. Some of them are equipped with remote controls that you can manage from inside your home. These alarm systems can be somewhat expensive, but they can be well worth the money spent simply because of the peace of mind they can offer to homeowners.
Having a pool on your property is really a tremendous responsibility because you are ultimately responsible not only for your own family's safety and well being, you are also responsible for the safety of others; including those who do not even have permission to be on your property.
